Kathy Henderson is a “powerful voice for the community”, with a strong record of getting things done. Kathy served as an AMERICORP *VISTA member, helping children improve their reading skills in 16 targeted assistance schools, throughout the District of Columbia. That success followed with her election as a 22-year, effective, award-winning advisory neighborhood commissioner in Ward 5; she delivered new sidewalks, speed humps, streetlights, trees, recreation programming and works closely with law enforcement to reduce crime and strengthen resident-police relationships in the city. Kathy Henderson stood up against drug dealers and led the fight to reclaim her community from constant gun violence and disorder; she created the Landlord Roundtable, using a multiple-agency approach to improve public safety and 5D Court Watch initiatives, which are proven to reduce crime. As a result of her efforts, long-term residents applauded and new residents moved into the community to enjoy opportunity and proximity to the U.S. National Arboretum and a cleaner Anacostia River.
Kathy is a strong champion for the environment, underscoring her training as a biologist at Howard University and is a preservationist and former C100 trustee; she also serves as a member of the Pepco Citizen Advisory Group (CAG), which was created to help clean up the Anacostia River. Kathy also advocated for development projects such as Atlas Flats (Union Heights), Starburst Plaza, Denny’s, Union Market, Hecht’s Ivy City, Rhode Island Row, Dakota Crossing and other key projects in our city, including Nationals Stadium. Kathy was elected city-wide as a Member of the DC Democratic State Committee, appointed to the D.C. Historic Preservation Review Board and as a Trustee for the Committee of 100 on the Federal City. Kathy also worked for the Federal Government and District Government where she helped put our residents back to work and was featured in Government News for her excellent work. Kathy Henderson cut through Government bureaucracy to install a dental suite at the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, in accordance with a Court-ordered consent decree; Kathy knows how to get things done and she is ready to make Government work for every D.C. resident. Kathy Henderson is a real people’s champion and will fight for every resident, in every ward; no one works harder!
Kathy was featured in People and Essence magazines and received awards from the Chief of Police, U.S. Attorney’s Office, CSOSA, Ward 5 Democrats, ANC 5B, the Fifth District CAC and others, including being invited to appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show and appearing on the Montel Williams Show. Kathy is a past member of the D.C. Chamber of Commerce and understands how a SAFE city and strong District Government supports a strong economy, high performing schools, much-needed affordable housing and more. Kathy Henderson is a strong advocate for D.C. residents and will promote and protect OUR interests!

Kathy's award-winning public service has been steadily built on a foundation of utilitarianism, underscoring the greatest good for the greatest number of people. Kathy is also a certified Toastmaster, former addiction counselor and creative problem-solver. Kathy has spent countless hours providing oral and written testimony before the D.C. Council, Public Service Commission, Office of the People's Counsel and more (some hearings lasted over ten (10) hours). Kathy Henderson is ready to uplift the District of Columbia for every resident! If you were born in DC, the city should be the birthplace for your success; if you moved here for opportunity, the city should be a shining example of municipal excellence for all!

Kathy Henderson will ensure ALL streetlights in every ward are working and properly illuminated to support and enhance public safety. Kathy Henderson will ensure that each time you contact the District Government, you will receive courteous, prompt and professional responses that link you quickly to the service you seek. These are basic infrastructure matters Kathy Henderson will address immediately upon being sworn-in as Mayor of the District of Columbia .

Commissioner Kathy Henderson has maintained a consistent record of treating all members of the community with dignity, compassion and respect, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or identity, political party, national origin or ideology. Kathy Henderson embraced the late Wanda Alston as a colleague and good friend; Alston was the first director of the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs and Henderson helped to organize and facilitate the first LGBTQ Citizen Summit, creating the talking points and brochure for the event. Kathy Henderson is a former EEOC counselor for the D.C. Department of Employment Services and certainly understands and appreciates the inherent value of all people. Kathy Henderson intends to be a mayor for ALL of DC, providing the highest level of service delivery and a D.C. Government environment we can ALL be proud of.
